Establishing an Online Community (MCC)

Description

As online learning continues to grow, most of us have had some experience with online courses, either as a learner or as a facilitator.   Have you considered what makes the online learning experience successful for learners? The online environment presents unique challenges - distractions, motivation, technical issues and isolation - that limit learners' abilities to achieve the outcomes we all need and want. This course is designed to provide facilitators with practical insights and approaches to help overcome these challenges. It draws from a solid body of research and practice that will enable you to facilitate a successful online community of learners.

Objectives

This competency-based course focuses on specific best practices that you will use to demonstrate your ability to establish an online community of inquiry. Through a series of learning activities and collaborative exercises, you'll consider what makes a community of inquiry so important in an online learning environment, identify best practices, and create a plan to establish an online community of inquiry in your own online course. As you engage in reflection and discussion, you'll consider the value of these skills, and identify the specific skills most relevant to you.

Course Facilitators

Jeremy Lally

Jeremy is an experienced eLearning professional with experience in Instructional Design, eLearning Development, and Learning Management System administration. He also has experience as a graphic designer that focused on branding, graphic design, and media for online training. This background in Instructional Design and graphic design covers over 20 years. 12 years as an Art Director, 8 years as Manager of a Creative Services team that met the eLearning graphics needs of up to 12 Instructional Designers, and 3 years as an Instructional Designer.

Jeremy has a passion for using technology to efficiently create effective training materials that meet business needs. Jeremy led the Des Moines area ATD Tech SIG group in 2018. He has attended the Nebraska Canvas Users Group Conference, 2018 ATD Nebraska Regional Conference, Training Magazine’s Online Training Conference 2017 and the Learning DevCamp 2014 conference.

Karen Wegner

As a learning professional in both business and academia, Karen seeks out and embraces emerging trends and technologies, and collaborates with numerous teams to establish learning strategy, critical systems, processes and infrastructure, and create innovative learning experiences. In her current role in the Metropolitan Community College (MCC) Workforce Innovation Division, Karen applies her strong industry experience to the design, development and delivery of a variety of high quality learning solutions. She has led efforts to train and certify MCC staff to do job analysis and develop industry responsive training using the Developing a Curriculum (DACUM) process, implement instructional design best practices such as accessible, Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and Open Educational Resources (OER), design digital scenario and video-based learning modules, and implement Worldwide Instructional Design (WIDS) software that supports backward design of competency based curriculum.

Karen holds a Master of Education in Adult Learning/ Human Resource Development from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities. She is an active member of the eLearning Guild, and currently serves on the Board of the Association for Talent Development (ATD) – Nebraska. She has also engaged with other professional associations, such as International Society for Performance Improvement (ISPI), Organization Development Network (ODN), Project Management Institute (PMI), Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD), and the National Staff Development Council (NSDC).
