Description

Unity is a cross-platform game engine developed by Unity Technologies, first announced and released in June 2005 as a Mac OS X-exclusive game engine. As of 2018, the engine had been extended to support more than 25 platforms. The engine can be used to create three-dimensional, two-dimensional, virtual reality, and augmented reality games, as well as simulations and other experiences. The engine has been adopted by industries outside video gaming, such as film, automotive, architecture, engineering and construction.

In this part-time professional learning program, participants will engage in hands-on project-based learning activities that will prepare them for three global certifications from one of the leading 2D, 3D, VR applications in the world – Unity! The framework to learning Unity starts with gaining basic skills, applying those skills, to advancing to a certified Unity 3D Artist and Developer.

This 16-hour course focuses on using the Unity Editor to develop a game using 2D and 3D game features. Participants will develop a game using sprites, animation, game mechanics, publishing, importing, and character configuration. No prior experience is required.

This 16-hour course focuses on how to create high quality 3D interactions in Unity and build a 2D mobile game from the ground up. Participants learn how to navigate in the Unity Editor, use key features of the 3D toolset, develop interactive mechanics, publish 3D applications, use features that enable mobile deployment, use Unity 2D toolset to set up characters and scenes, create in-editor animations, build 2D game mechanics that enable mobile gameplay, and prepare for mobile deployment. Game Development I Using Unity is a prerequisite.

3D Interactive environments have a figurative appearance. Much like our own world, this type of world allows interaction with other (networked) beings as well as manipulation of objects. This 8-hour beginner workshop focuses on the features of a small scale kitchen configuration of what can be found in Lowes, Ikea, and Home Depot. Participants learn how to create high quality 3D interactions in Unity in an efficient and optimized way while building a simple configuration. Prerequisite: no prior experience required.

Introduction to 2D Game Development 2D, or two-dimensional animation, is a combination of artistic technique and media design that creates the illusion of movement in a two-dimensional environment. This 8-hour beginner workshop guides participants through the suite of 2D features. Topics include sprites, animation, game mechanics, and publishing so the participants can build a 2D game from the ground up. Prerequisite: no prior experience is required.

Introduction to 3D Game Development

In 3D computer graphics, 3D modeling is the process of developing a mathematical representation of any surface of an object (either inanimate or living) in three dimensions via specialized software. These three values can be labeled by any combination of three chosen from the terms width, height, depth, and length. This 8-hour beginner workshop gets participants up and running with the Unity game engine focusing specifically on working the 3D features. Topics include importing, animation, character configuration, implementing game mechanics, and publishing. Prerequisite: prior experience with the Unity editor.

Introduction to Mobile Game Development

Mobile gaming has countless success stories like Angry Birds, Candy Crush, Clash of Clans, Flappy Bird, etc. They have inspired millions to take an initiative in mobile game development. This 8-hour beginner workshop prepared participants to work with the 2D mobile features. Topics include sprites, animation, game mechanics, analytics, monetization, and publishing. Participants use 2D toolset to build character, scenes, animations, and game mechanics for mobile deployment of their game. Prerequisite: no prior experience required.

Introduction to Animated Storytelling

Animated storytelling is typically reserved for children’s tales, fantasy, and lighthearted narratives, but that’s not how it has to be. Animation appeals to people of all ages and backgrounds because animation is a compelling way to tell a story. This 8-hour beginner workshop is designed to instructor participant looking to harness Unity for cinematic sequences such as trailers, cut-scenes, short films, and more. Topics include project setup, layout and scene building, lighting, cameras and shot building, and final frame. Prerequisite: no prior experience required.

Preparing Design Assets for Visualization in Unity

This 8-hour beginner workshop, introduces participants to the process of importing common design asset format such as Alias Studio data using PiXYZ Plugin. Topics include how to optimize meshes, group objects according to type, and generate prefabs/ and how to set up HDRP materials and lighting in preparation for high-quality renders and design visualization. Prerequisite: no prior experience required.

Stunning Visuals: A Workflow for Artists

This 8-hour beginner workshop prepares participants to work with new features to create a futuristic racing game using assets created by Cybernetic Walrus. Topics include more detailed aspects of lighting settings, how to work with Refection probes, create the game’s vehicle controller using Cinemachine to generate a dynamic camera, working with post-processing stack and Post-processing volumes to generate different lighting scenarios throughout the scene, and create an opening cutscene with Timeline. Prerequisite: prior experience with the Unity editor required.

Introduction to Virtual Reality

Virtual reality (VR) is a simulated experience that can be similar to or completely different from the real world. This 8-hour intermediate level workshop provides participants with the information to get started in VR. Topics include developing a basic VR game for PC/Mac/Console, optimization techniques, ergonomics, physics, and audio for VR. Participants are encouraged to bring both a headset and controllers. The VR game that participants will build is compatible with the HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and usable on any other PC headset; it will not work on mobile. Prerequisite: prior experience with the Unity editor.

Unity Certified Programmer Exam Preparation

This 24-hour intermediate workshop challenges participants to build two complete Unity projects, implement core interactivity, support systems, and platform optimization while preparing them to take the Unity Certified Programmer Exam. Topics include programming core interactions, working in the pipeline, developing application systems, programming for scene and environment design, optimizing performance and platforms, and working in software development teams. Prerequisite: 1-2 years of programming interactive experience with Unity and proficient in C# required.

Unity Certified 3D Artist Exam Preparation

This 24-hour intermediate workshop prepares participants in asset creation and management; lighting, reflection, and post-processing effect; integrating scripts for scene integrations; character setup; and setting up cutscenes while preparing participants to pass the Unity Certified 3D Artist Exam. Prerequisite: 1-2 years of programming experience with Unity.

Planning for Top Performance: Optimization Techniques

This 8-hour intermediate workshop provides participants with proven workflows for overcoming performance issues in games. Topics include common optimization issues like graphics optimization, script optimization, memory allocations, and platform limitations. Prerequisite: prior experience with the Unity editor required.

Migrating to the Latest Version of Unity: 2018.2

This 8-hour intermediate workshop prepares participants to migrate an existing Unity project into the latest version of Unity Editor. Topics include upgrades to code, assets, extensions, and shaders; workflow implementation; how to assess, evaluate, and determine which scriptable render pipeline best suits project needs; and a brief overview of what to prepare in Unity 2018.3. Prerequisite: intermediate experience working on Unity projects required.

3D Portfolio Development

Did you know that hiring managers spend 6 seconds scanning each resume before deciding who to call for an interview? You are more likely to be called for an interview if hiring managers can see samples of your past work and/or learning. This 15 hour workshop allows participants to demonstrate skill and competence in the area of Unity development. An electronic portfolio is accessed through the web and highlights stellar work and is typically shown to potential employers to gain employment. Participants will set up an e-Portfolio to include a home page, an artifact page, and a contact page.
